Lymphedema management made easy with compression boots.
What is lymphedema?
Managing lymphedema effectively is crucial to improving quality of life and minimizing complications. Lymphedema can be characterized into an acute (recent) or chronic (long term) condition. Often the presentation that would be an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the extremities (arms or legs). In an acute presentation this can me because of intense physical use ore exercise. A good example would be someone that just ran a half marathon or spent all weekend on the pickleball court. During an event where the physical demand on the muscles is intense the body can sometimes have a difficult time keeping up while processing the excess lymphatic fluid. This can slow down the recovery phase of the body. During more of a chronic lymphedema, lymph nodes/ vessels are either damaged or missing, disrupting the normal lymph flow in the arms or legs.
Do compression boots help lymphedema?
Yes, we use Normatec boots as a tool for effective part of lymphedema management. This device uses dynamic air compression to mimic natural blood flow, helping to move lymph fluid our of the affecting limbs and back into the circulatory system. This can significantly reduce swelling. We utilize boots for the legs or arms depending on the area that is affected. The intensity level is adjustable and tailored to the patients needs and comfort level.
How often can treatment be performed?
The frequency of using the compression boots can vary on the severity of the edema and depending if this is an acute onset of more of a chronic condition. Regular assessments are performed to tailor the frequency to maximize benefits and adapt to changes with the condition.
